Introduction :
Application of Smart Technologies initiated into a new paradigm for diagnoses, patient data management and health care delivery in healthcare setting in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Children’s Hospital (HKCH) was a new developed and designated children hospital in the Hospital Authority (HA). Various “SMART” projects were complemented with the innovative technologies in HKCH, such as Smart panel and e-vital project, In-patient Medication Order Entry, Asset tagging system, Baby tagging system, Clinical dashboards and Electronic patient assessment forms, thus enhancing higher efficiency from clinical assessment to evaluation across the whole patient journey.
Methodology :
Hong Kong Children’s Hospital was the pioneer of PAED e-vital on 28 Oct, 2020 at HA and its implementation of Smart Panel accomplished at 11 wards with around 250 beds as at Dec 2020. Nursing Services Division (NSD) led and coordinated the rollout of these projects in HKCH. With the great support from the hospital management and HAHO project team, and also the collaboration among multidisciplinary teams, the projects were implemented successfully and efficiently.

Staff engagement was an essential element during the rollout of these projects at HKCH. Since hospitals would have different practices and regulations, the practice alignment was hence important. Feedback was collected from nurses in different rankings and was reported to task working groups. Training and clinical drills were provided for users’ application and made the systems run safely and smoothly. Site visits and face-to-face discussion with frontline nurses were also conducted so that prompt response and solution could be provided when problems encountered while using the system. The team coordinated the above projects step-by-step according to the Phase I service development plan and receive positive feedback from different stakeholders.
Result & Outcome :
The adoption of Smart technologies definitely rewrote the clinical nursing workflow. The Smart Panel and e-vital system enabled users to “View Anywhere Anytime”, enhanced data integration and efficiency of care delivery. It would ultimately enhance the quality and the experience of patient and their families in Hong Kong Children’s Hospital.
