Introduction :
There is a growing need to improve patient education in order to enhance safe discharge following fast track rehab program for patients after total joint replacement in Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. A Quick Response (QR) code has been used as an alternative method to provide home safety and joint precaution education by Occupational Therapist. It could also meet the service gap for patient who would be discharged during weekend with no Occupational Therapy service.
Objectives :
To evaluate the effectiveness of the web based educational program for this patients after total knee replacement (TKR) or total hip replacement (THR).
Methodology :
36 participants were recruited. It was a prospective study, a QR code with links to obtain educational videos instead of a conventional information leaflet was provided to patients after TKR or THR by Occupational Therapist on their day of hospital discharge (post-operative day 2-3). The videos provided demonstrations to guide proper use of home aids, car-transfer skill and joint precaution/ adapted skills in Activity of Daily Living (ADL). Satisfaction and convenience use of the QR code, pre-post joint precaution related knowledge test and pre-post Chinese version of Fall Efficacy Scale were recorded. Pair t-test was used to compare the pre-post scores of the joint precaution related knowledge test and Fall Efficacy Scale for the participants.
Result & Outcome :
It showed that patients have improvement in joint precaution related knowledge test and Fall Efficacy Scale in ADL after the program (p < 0.05). 32 patients (88%) satisfied with convenience of the QR code and found it was useful, and stated that they could access the rehab information at their convenience or when they have question by their mobile phone.
To conclude, the findings provide preliminary support the application of web based educational materials for patients after TKR or THR in terms of satisfaction, improvement in knowledge and functional outcomes. Further study to investigate caregiver handling skills after the program was suggested.
