Introduction :
High quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation is crucial for cardiac arrested patient to survive. Nurses who are always the first rescuers should be well equipped with related knowledge and skills and act rapidly to cardiac arrest. To maximize nurses’ performance competency and prepare for the foreseeable expansion of nursing role in resuscitation, adult resuscitation training tailor-made for nurses was developed.
Objectives :
To integrate resuscitation knowledge and skills into better clinical practice
To enhance performance competency and empower nurses in performing CPR
To ensure good team collaboration during CPR
Methodology :
The adult resuscitation training for nurse is composed of two parts, online assessment on resuscitation knowledge and hands on skill practice and assessment workshop. They consist of theoretical input, didactic instruction, and active participation in simulated cases, in which cognitive, behavioral, and psychomotor skills learning are integrated.
Nurses must first read the study guide and pass the online assessment to strengthen the important resuscitation concept. During the workshop, nurses have the opportunities to improve resuscitation skills like airway management and electrical therapy in different stations. Together with the simulation training, nurses could practice and appreciate team collaboration and upon completion of training, nurses should have a better understanding of role and responsibility during resuscitation.
All training materials were developed in accordance with AHA guideline for CPR and ECC by a team of expertise such as ACLS Faculty/Instructors, ICU clinicians. The workshop is governed by KWH and WTSH Resuscitation Committee. The simulation cases were adopted from real clinical situation. In addition, pharmacological knowledge input is from KWH pharmacy.
Result & Outcome :
The resuscitation training for nurses has been conducted by KWH Central Nursing Division and Multidisciplinary Simulation Training Centre with over 1600 participants since 2005.
The training was highly appreciated by the participants. They expressed the workshop was practical and could enhance their confidence and competency of performing CPR. Also, it is well recognized and acknowledged by nurse leaders and clinicians. They reflected that the nursing performance of CPR in clinical setting was satisfactory and patient safety was well secured.
