Introduction :
Clinical practice guidelines and specialty references are essential sources of information to enhance surgical safety and nurse competence in the operating theater. They are available at the hospital intranet, but to access these is not easy and always timely, especially when outside the hospital network. Therefore, a pilot project is implemented in NDH OT for strengthening the accessibilities of clinical practice information in orthopedic specialty.
Objectives :
1.To establish a website in which include all necessary information so nursing staff can more efficiently to search and gain information. 2.To create a QR code as a shortcut to access the orthopedic database. 3.To assist nursing staff obtain up to date information related to orthopedic operation through the website
Methodology :
Forty pre-questionnaires were delivered to NDH OT nurses, and 35 questionnaires were collected back. There are 18 nurses (over 50%) replied they need to search for surgical manuals on the internet after work. At the same time 26 (74%) of them agreed with the idea to set up an electronic platform to organize orthopedic resources. After testing different interfaces, such as mobile application and website, a platform named E-resource was set up in conjunction with QR code, internet, and smartphone. The platform is simple to use, almost cost-free, and reproducible. After that a group of senior orthopedic nurses was invited to collect, organize and publish related orthopedic information and to provide education and demonstration to all nurses using this platform. They were also invited to design a poster for to promote this platform.
Result & Outcome :
Fifty post-survey were then delivered, and a total 40 feedbacks were collected. All (40) nurses agreed that E-resource provides an efficient and convenient way for self-learning. Almost all of them (97%) agreed that E-resource is easy and convenient to access. They recognized that E-resource is well organized and able to enrich their knowledge and skills in surgical procedures. The QR code and Internet technology provided an easy and convenient way to access the database. E-resource changes our practice from reading traditional paper references to paperless electronic resources. For further improvement, the orthopedic team will regularly review and update the information. It is feasible and practical to implement the platform in other specialties and worth it to be included in the new staff orientation program.
