Enhancement program on patient education in paediatric haematology and oncology centre in Hong Kong Children's Hospital

Introduction :
The Haematology and Oncology centre of Hong Kong Children’s Hospital has commenced its service since 1Q 2019. The patients from translocation of haematology and oncology services from 5 regional hospitals has completed by 3Q 2019. Both patients and families were facing significant physical, emotional and psychosocial challenges due to new hospital environment and unfamiliar medical and nursing team and various information provided among different hospitals. In order to facilitate their coping, it is important to align the health educational information provided to patients and their families.
Objectives :
- To align the health education information provided to patient and family in haematology and oncology centre

- To enhance patients and their family members’ knowledge on the daily routine care during hospitalization, the treatment plans and the interpretation of blood results, home care and central line care.

- To empower self-care of patients upon discharge
Methodology :
Senior nurses from different translocated hospitals were recruited to discuss the different clinical practices. 3 information booklets were formulated to provide standard information to patients and family. The booklets were 1) Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Ward Overview. 2) Record book for the patients’ journey throughout the disease treatment process in haematology and oncology centre and 3) Discharge advice

Pilot study was done from 9 Mar 2020 to 23 Mar 2020. 3 booklets were delivered to patients and family during different time point of hospitalization. Then, 39 patients and 30 nurses were recruited by convenience sampling to evaluate their satisfaction level from 30 Mar 2020 to 13 Apr 2020. Satisfaction survey with scoring and open-ended questions were distributed to them for the feedback of the booklets.
Result & Outcome :
The return rate of survey from patients/family and nurses was 100% and 77% respectively. 97% of parents reported satisfactory on the booklets. They showed positive feedback as concluded as;

- Better understanding on ward environment and daily operation

- Better understanding on patients’ journey during the treatment process in haematology and oncology centre.

- With much confidence in taking care of patients upon discharge

95% of staff nurses reported satisfactory on the booklets. They showed positive feedback as concluded as:

- Contents of the booklets are comprehensive enough for the new patietns/family

- Easy for staff to deliver the same information to patients/family
