Introduction :
Therapeutic apheresis (TA)is highly complex procedure that required nurses to work independently with appropriate technical and nursing skills. Since the translocation of Hong Kong paediatrics haematology and oncology service to Hong Kong Children's Hospital(HKCH) in March 2019, there were 47 TA episodes in the year of 2020 and only five qualified apheresis nurses were available. With an increasing demand of cellular therapeutic product collection in haematology and oncology service, our goal is to maintain the standard in performing TA and sustain the service. A training programme on apheresis nursing is established to qualify the competency of new apheresis nurses to perform apheresis procedure safely and efficiently.
Objectives :
1) To provide an optimal TA service in HKCH. 2) To uphold and standardize the quality of apheresis service through enhancing the advanced practice of the apheresis nurses theoretically and practically. 3) To enhance nurses' knowledge and skills in TA.
Methodology :
Four haematology oncology nurses were selected and a training programme was implemented in 3Q included the following content: 1) Two theoretical lectures on apheresis nursing. 2) One workshop on operation of the apheresis procedure. 3) A written examination. 4) Clinical practicum on apheresis procedure was started from 4Q 2020. 5) Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of apheresis nursing will be endorsed.
Result & Outcome :
1) Twenty haematology and oncology nurses, included the existing apheresis nurses attended the lectures. Evaluation with average 94.7% of attendances satisfied with lectures. 2) The passing rate of the recruited participants were 100%. 3) Four haematology and oncology nurses were grounded as apheresis nurse trainees and started of clinical practicum in October 2020. In conclusion, four apheresis nurse trainees were successfully trained in the programme. The standard of apheresis nursing is aligned. The advanced practice on apheresis nursing is being enhanced and strengthened.
