Introduction :
Blood sampling via central venous access device (CVAD) is a daily clinical procedure in Paediatric Oncology. Various practice has been observed in different settings may lead to risk of infection and erroneous results. Hong Kong Children’s Hospital intends to provide not only quality but also safe service to diseased children. Therefore, this project aims to provide coherent and evidence-based skill training to nurses with and without previous experience and residents rotate to HKCH in order to minimize risks that can occur during blood sampling via CVAD.
Objectives :
- To standardize and align practice in basic blood sampling from CVAD for pediatrics oncology patients.
- To update and refresh nurses and residents on related knowledge and skill.
- To teach nurses who are new to the procedure with theoretic and practical knowledge and have the chance to practice the procedure at work.
Methodology :
- Standard of practice (SOP) will be endorsed.
- Video will be produced according to SOP as a training material.
- Training program which includes classroom lecture, video illustration and workshop will be developed. Participants recruitment included all paediatric oncology nurses, SOPD nurses and
- Training program will be reached out to nurses who take care of paediatric oncology patients and residents during orientation week.
- Skill competency will be assessed with a standardized assessment form by the training coordinators.
Result & Outcome :
- Standard of practice: Procedure: Basic Blood Sampling from Central Venous Access Device for Paediatric Oncology Patient will be established.
- Alignment of blood sampling technique from CVAD among team nurses and doctors.
- All nurses in oncology ward will complete training and skill assessment
