Introduction :
Nurses strive for their best performance in order to take great care of their patients. Senior nurses not only equip with knowledge and experience in caring their patients, but also are great potential clinical managers in their workplace. Despite of existing well-established training programs in hospital level, role transition preparedness still depends on hands-on opportunities in ward or settings. To align with hospital expansion and foster more future nurse leaders, programed coaching is crucial to assist role transition. An empowerment program was established to provide various managerial opportunities to support nurses’ career advancement.
Objectives :
-To prepare role transition -To foster career development
Methodology :
The program started in 2019, selected candidates were provided 3-6 months period to shadow-work with Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) in ward. Aiming to strengthen various management skills and knowledge such as manpower resourcing, material and equipment arrangement (procurement) and complex patients journey management, each candidate was assigned to different managerial jobs by Ward Manager (WM) and given the chance to de-brief and evaluate respective assignment. They were provided with ward managerial opportunities including nurse duty allocation, common ward materials organization, out-patients clinics secondment and interview drillings. Candidates were asked to review their performance through a de-briefing session with APNs and WM. A reflective journal was also provided by candidates for self-rating and reflection. At the end of the program, candidates were provided with an interview drilling session in which APNs and WM help to consolidate their interview skills.
Result & Outcome :
In the year of 2019-2020, total 4 selected potential nurses were recruited. All of them went through all management jobs assigned. All of them rated a very satisfactory comment to this program. In year 2019 and 2020, 100% of program candidates were selected in promotion interview to strive for their career advancement.
