Video-based nasal douching education in the postoperative care of patients after sinonasal surgery

Introduction :
Sinonasal diseases are common worldwide diseases that significantly affect patients’ quality of life (QoL). Sinonasal surgery would be performed on patients with severe symptoms. Meanwhile, early and proper nasal douching can minimize the post-operative complications, relieve the nasal symptoms and result in optimizing short term and long term QoL.
Objectives :
1.To provide standardize and comprehensive education

2.To ensure effectiveness and quality of education

3.To support on rehabilitation process at home

4.To optimize the short term and long term QoL among post sinonasal surgery patients
Methodology :
Post-operative nasal douching patient education package designed by ENT nurses is provided to patients with sinonasal surgery before discharge. The package includes leaflet facilitation and verbal illustration. An education alternative, video-based nasal douching education, has also been launched for improving the education quality. QR code of the video has been supplemented to patients for supporting home rehabilitation.





A post-education questionnaire has been employed for evaluation of the project. Inclusive targets: 1.Caregivers of post operative adult patients or post operative adult patients who require nasal douching after packing removal 2. Literate caregivers or patients 3. Able to use digital device
Result & Outcome :
From Sep 2020 to Dec 2020, there are totally 13 patients being served. 46.2% are female while 53.8% are male. The post video-based nasal douching education evaluation average score is 8.77/10 while the median score is 9/10. All of them showed satisfaction in using video-based education. 38.5% expressed that they only need nasal douching education video for education facilitation while 61.5% prefer both written and video-based education materials.



Conclusion:



The video-based nasal douching education provided a standardized and comprehensive education, ensured patient’s understanding after receiving the education and provided patient support on home rehabilitation which resulted in 100% satisfaction from patients.
