Introduction :
Lifting, transferring and positioning patients is common manual handling operations that clinical staff perform daily but with hazards. Both mobile and ceiling hoist are available in care provision. Ceiling hoist can accomplish patient transfer in limited space with fewer caregivers and require less set-up time. However, frontline staff rarely use ceiling hoists as they are incompetent to operate those mechanical devices with multi-components. Ceiling hoist should be highly recommended as it is a comfortable and effective way in lifting and moving patients. Several studies showed that it greatly reduces the amount of strain, over-exertion and also injuries of frontline staff. However, the combination system installed consists of multiple components which require them to master the patient handling techniques and related principles for working. Therefore, training program of ceiling hoist is developed to promote and enhance frontline staff utilization of it.
Objectives :
1. To enhance frontline staff’s knowledge and skill in safe operation of ceiling hoist; 2. To ensure patient safety during ceiling hoist transfer; 3. To enhance frontline staff’s competency in operating ceiling hoist; 4. To facilitate the compliance of frontline staff in using ceiling hoist; 5. To promote safe MHO culture in ward setting
Methodology :
Before the training workshop, participants are required to watch the video on “Basic Manual Handling Operations Skill Training: Safe Use of Ceiling Patient Hoist” from Hospital Authority Head Office. Basic information related to ceiling hoist and MHO are included in the video. A 30-minutes training workshop which consists of three parts: 1. Hands-on introduction of the different parts of ceiling hoist and the important point during operation. Knowledge related to MHO also reminded to participants; 2. Demonstration on operating the ceiling hoist; 3. Participants’ return demonstration with individual audit on MHO assessment on safe use of ceiling patient hoist, are provided by ward OSH facilitators. A photo operation guide of ceiling hoist system is developed and hangs on the machine together with manufacturer provided quick guide for easy retrieval if there is any doubt. Daily checking on ceiling hoist is reinforced to ensure it is functioning properly and ready for use at anytime.
Result & Outcome :
1. Minimize staff injury on duty (IOD) regarding patient transfer or lifting related MHO 2. All staff pass the audit on “Safe Use of Ceiling Patient Hoist” 3. Frontline staff can operate the ceiling hoist competently and correctly in daily practice A total of 16 staff, 10 nurses and 6 PCAs, from OLMH ward N4 participated in the program. Audit on the safe use of ceiling patient hoist was performed to all participant with 100% compliance rate. The test regarding safety using ceiling patient hoist was got 100% correct compare with around 75% correct on average before the program. All staff satisfied with the program and showed confident in using the ceiling hoist to lifting and transferring patient.
