Introduction :
A myriad of nursing graduates start their career pathways under the hospitals in the Hospital Authority every year. They usually encountered a sense of insecurity, worrying of clinical incompetence and knowledge to handle with their duties especially in the specialty. Although our hospital has provided a ToUCH program for them to cope with the challenge, but we alert that those new graduates in Renal specialty also need to tackle specialty knowledge and clinical skills. So we launched a Preceptee Renal Enable Program (PREP) in 2018 to maximize the support on nurturing our young nurses.
Objectives :
- Empower the newly joint nurses with the knowledge and skills to deliver care of patients with Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT). - Facilitate the professional growth of experienced renal nurses through teaching and coaching through the PREP.
Methodology :
The 4 days’ program was running in 2018 and extended to 5 days in 2019 after first year evaluation of the program. The content include orientation, theories and clinical specialty procedure demonstration. The assessment on simulated-based & ward based skill was done. We also empower experienced nurses by recruiting them to provide lectures. Evaluation was done from the newly joint nurses at the end of the program.
Result & Outcome :
Result: From August 2018 to November 2019, 14 new joined nurses attended the PREP program and 100% evaluation forms were returned. In the questionnaire, participants were requested to rate items listed in terms of a Likert Scale from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 6 (Strongly Agree). Furthermore, the participants agreed that PREP achieved the following objectives with the mean score: 1. Increasing sense of belonging (4.97), 2. Providing support to them in clinical practice (5.33), 3. Equipping professional practice skills through lectures(5.33), 4. PREP was being practical/useful (5.25), 5. Speakers enhancing their learning (5.41), 6. Gaining satisfaction through the program (5.41).
//Conclusion: The PREP successfully supports the newly joint nurses and increases their competency to work in renal specialty ward. Meanwhile, the experienced nurses also expressed that they have gained knowledge, career satisfaction and developed leadership ability in their feedback.
