Introduction :
The evidence of using NIV in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure (CHF) and respiratory failure is strong and becomes one important therapy in Emergency Department (ED). We estimate 400 cases will receive NIV during their ED stay in 2018. However, our training needs analysis conducted in 2019 suggested that many emergency nurses did not feel enough competent and confident to provide acute NIV on their own. Therefore, an educational programme was developed for staff empowerment in this area.
Objectives :
To increase competency of emergency nurses in managing patients requiring NIV
Methodology :
Three identical workshops, which lasted for 2.5 hours each with continuing nursing education granted, were organized within the ED. It was a collaborative effort between the Nurse Consultant (Respiratory Care) and the ED with the aims to improve the practice in respiratory care. The workshop included lecture and skill demonstration. The contents included indications and contraindications of NIV application, set up, nursing management and trouble shootings. Their knowledge were assessed by pre-and post-workshop quiz. Paired t-test was used to test the mean score differences. All emergency nurses were eligible to attend the workshop. The program was evaluated on its relevancy to clinical work and other administrative arrangements using a 1-6 likert scale, with a higher score indicating more agreement to that item.
Result & Outcome :
Total 35 emergency nurses participated in the workshop. All of them were satisfied with the workshop and agreed that it can increase the understanding of NIV. Besides, it helped to develop the competent (mean score: 4.9) and confident level (mean score: 5) in using NIV. Participants also suggested to learn more on advanced nursing care (41%), NIV set-up (28%) and trouble shootings (24%). The mean score of knowledge was increased from 5.53 to 7.93 over 10 by 2.4 score (p< 0.01). NIV is important therapy in ED. Regular NIV workshops to all emergency nurses can be considered in the future.
