Introduction :
Patients with schizophrenia were known to have increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM).
Objectives :
We aim to study the cardiovascular risk factor control and diabetic complication rates of schizophrenic patients with T2DM at primary care clinics in Hong Kong.
Methodology :
Cross sectional descriptive study. All schizophrenic patients with T2DM under regular follow-up in 2 General outpatient clinics (GOPCs) in Hong Kong from1/1/2016 to 31/12/2017 were reviewed. Their cardiovascular risk factor control including Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), blood pressure, low density lipoprotein (LDL), diabetic complication rates and healthcare utilization rates were analysed.
Result & Outcome :
183 T2DM patients were found to have schizophrenia during the study period, with a prevalence rate of 1.38%. Schizophrenic T2DM patients were found to be significantly younger (58.1+10.2 vs. 66.3+12.1, p< 0.001) than general T2DM patients. When comparing to age- and sex-matched T2DM patients, schizophrenic T2DM patients were noted to be more obese, yet their mean HbA1c was lower (6.7+0.9% vs. 7.0+1.2%, p=0.006) and their diabetic retinopathy rate was lower (22.7% vs. 41.5%, p=0.009). They were found to have more frequent outpatient medical attendance than the general diabetic group (47.6+64.3 vs. 17.3+11.5, p < 0.001).
