Introduction :
Numbers of patients with assisted ventilation (invasive and non-invasive) are cared in acute general medical units. The situation poses high care burden, prolonged ventilator use and high occupancy as well as raising safety issues. According to a review of HAHO from 2017-2019, there was 350 cases with assisted ventilation per day on average in general Medical Wards under HA hospitals. Training needs of caring patients with assisted ventilation were high and reviewed in United Christian Hospital. First phase of training had been collaborated with different Departments and provided from July to November 2019.
Objectives :
Review the training needs for care of patients with assisted ventilation in the hospital Enhance the competence of colleagues caring for patients with assisted ventilation in the hospital in phase one
Methodology :
Training needs were reviewed across different departments, coverage of related training and level of care for patients with assisted ventilation in the hospital. One and half or two hours a session with total seven sessions were planned and granted with CNE points for 2019 preceptees, the Department of Medicine & Geriatrics, the Department of Accident & Emergency and for those caring for patients with assisted ventilation in United Christian Hospital respectively. The topics included care of patients with invasive ventilation and non-invasive ventilation respectively. The workshop contents include lecture, case study and demonstration and quiz. Their knowledge was tested by pre and post quiz. Paired t-test of SPSS was used to test the mean score different between pre and post workshop quiz.
Result & Outcome :
Total 235 nurses who cared patients with assisted ventilation had participated the training sessions in United Christian Hospital in 2019. Total seven sessions granted with CNE points had been collaborated with the Department of Medicine & Geriatrics, the Department of Accident & Emergency and Nursing Services Division for those caring for patients with assisted ventilation in United Christian Hospital respectively. The mean score of knowledge was increased from 5.53 to 7.93 over 10 by 2.4 score (p-value< 0.01). Staff satisfaction survey showed colleagues were satisfied with mean score of 5.1 over 6 on average for the training sessions.
