Introduction :
Graduate nurses experience stress from role transition, increased workload and responsibilities and new relationship resulting in anxiety. It may lead to low job satisfaction and poor performance resulting in resignation. Meta-analytic studies reported mindfulness based treatment including body scan, sitting and gentle yoga could reduce stress and anxiety. In PYNEH, Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey has been conducted in 219 nurse graduates for 3 years since 2016. 80% of nurse graduates under stress and 20% of them experienced insomnia. Over 70% of them reported increase psychosocial support could improve professional satisfaction. A pilot program, Share Happiness and Relaxing Experiential (SHARE) Program, based on Mindfulness Based Cognitive training and Experiences Sharing, was provided by Nursing Services Division. It aimed at introducing nurse graduates to make a radical shift in relationship to their thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations that facilitate stress coping.
Objectives :
To evaluate the effectiveness of Psychosocial Support Program – SHARE Program in promoting stress coping and well-being amongst nurse graduates.
Methodology :
The program was based on Mindfulness Based Cognitive Approach with group based experience sharing, carried out for four weeks at 2 hours per week with practice sessions in between. A quasi-experimental, pre-post study design was used. A voluntary sample of 40 nurse graduates, from Year 2015/16, 2016/17 & 2017/18 nurse recruitment, participated the program. Chinese Depression and Anxiety Stress Scale (Chinese DASS-21), Chinese Perceived Stress Scale (Chinese PSS) and Program feedback collection were used to measure the stress-related outcomes.
Result & Outcome :
After completing the program, the participants reported significant improvement in the level of depression and anxiety (Chinese DASS-21) Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed p = 0.032 (p< 0.05), and perceived stress (Chinese PSS) showed p = 0.021 (p< 0.05). Self-reported findings from participants revealed that program awaken their inner wisdom to manage their daily stress. They also found peer support with mutual learning was useful. The results support the effectiveness of SHARE Program in stress coping and promoting well-being amongst nurse graduates. PYNEH strives to retain young nursing workforce. Therefore, we would like to recommend SHARE Program to all newly recruited nurses and nurses who have changed working environment (e.g. after 1st clinical rotation) as part of the hospital’s continuing nursing support program.
