Introduction :
Transspenoidal surgery (TSS)is a common used surgical approach for pituitary region masses, with minimal invasive surgery performed to remove tumors and allows preservation of a great majority of the nasal mucosa which promotes rapid healing, preservation of sense of smell and a generally rapid recovery. however, the correlation between post TSS nursing care and complication rate of TSS had not be studied or concluded.
Objectives :
This study assessed the effectiveness of our nursing care for post-TSS patient in early identification and prompt treatment of pituitary dysfunction and neurosurgical complications, based on quality of nursing care and operative complication rate.
Methodology :
18 literatures of post Transsphenoidal nursing care were reviewed and compared with nursing care in Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH). The complication rate and length of stay of KWH TSS case was compared with other countries.
Result & Outcome :
Data of 17 Tss cases in KWH between January and September 2019 was collected. Our nursing practice is similar to other countries which bring good outcome to post TSS patient. The length of hospitalization (3-8 days) and rate of complications (Diabetes Insipidus, CerebroSpinal Fuild Leakage, Infection, Epistaxis, Visual Complications, and Unplanned Re-admission) in our 17 cases also was similar to other countries. In literature review, it shown nursing care could not reduce complication rate of TSS, but prevent severe complication by early detection and treatment. Conclusion: With comprehensive and expert nursing care, early identification and prompt treatment to reduce post-operative severe complications of pituitary dysfunction and neurosurgical complications, and patient obtain better outcomes of TSS.
