Introduction :
According to the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department in 2016, there are 548,000 ethnic minorities (EMs) living in Hong Kong. 11% (around 60000) of the total EMs population are living within our service area. Based on race, culture and language differences, a community integration program for the EMs has been implemented in Pok Oi Hospital.
Objectives :
1) To explore the supports that are essential for EMs
2) To enhance the mutual communication between EMs and Pok Oi Hospital
3) To introduce the services provided by Pok Oi Hospital to raise awareness of EMs
Methodology :
An Ethnic Minorities Networking Group with interdepartmental support was established within Pok Oi Hospital (POH). Two NGOs, Support Service Centre for Ethnic Minorities and the Society for the Aid and Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers were invited to join in and share the needs of EMs in New Territories West Cluster. Regarding the population size, Nepali and Pakistani were invited as target audiences. A health talk on Diabetic Mellitus management and personal health care highlights was held in October 2019. The audiences’ feedback was collected by evaluation form after the event.
Result & Outcome :
It is found that the community integration program is implemented with unprecedented success. Over 98% of target audience showed support or very much support to the program in the evaluation. Also, they requested to organize the program again in 2020. In addition, the EM groups raised the request for introduction on the clinical services in POH.
The community integration program is not only welcomed by the EM groups, but also NGOs and hospital. It enhances the mutual understanding between EM groups and clinical workers. It is platform to explore the potential risk and improvement areas in the clinical services that is provided to the EM groups. In this connection, a hospital visit is planned to be arranged for EM groups in 2020.
