Introduction :
In Pok Oi Hospital (POH) Operation theatre, among 7189 cases of anesthesia performed from 1/4/2017 to 31/3/2018, the proportion of general anesthesia was 52%. It reflected that there was a great demand for general anesthetic services in POH OT. Owing to the fact that more than half (63%) of the nursing staff in POH operation theatre has less than 5 years OT experience and it is found that the preceptor program for nurses does not provide comprehensive knowledge about general anesthesia. Therefore, training of assisting in endotracheal intubation for theatre nurses is necessary to achieve to service needs.
Objectives :
The aim of the project is to enhance nurses’ knowledge and skills in assisting endotracheal intubation in operation theatre. The objectives of the workshop are to train nursing staff to be capable of responding appropriately to anesthetists during intubation, to demonstrate competence in basic airway management skills and be able to participate in assisting intubation independently.
Methodology :
The FADE model was applied in the project. FADE refers to focus, analysis, development, execution and evaluation. The focus of the program is to enhance the knowledge and skills of nursing staffs in assisting intubation and extubation in order to meet the service needs. First of all, we designed a questionnaire to determine the needs of the program in the view of other nursing staffs. After that, analysis was done to evaluate the results. For development, educational workshop was developed. The workshop consisted of the materials of ET tube intubation and extubation, pre-test and post-test, demonstration and return demonstration preparation, as well as assessment form for participants to be assessed by anaesthetists when they practice on real patients. For execution, four educational workshops were held in different weeks. The content was approved by corresponding APN and anesthesiologist. For evaluation, self-developed test was performed to assess the knowledge of participants. Return demonstration on model was supervised and advised by our group. Lastly, assessment of performing ET intubation on real patients was done by anesthesiologist.
Result & Outcome :
The mean score of the pre-test was 60% and the post-test was 80%. Comparing the mean score, there are improvements between pre- and post-test. There are total 20 staffs attended the hands on demonstration. All of them were passed after three attempts of assisting intubation. In the end, all of them agreed that they are more confident in assisting intubation after hands on demonstration.
To conclude, the training is effective.
