Introduction :
Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) in Physiotherapy Department of PMH are significant in providing safe and effective rehabilitation service. Last year, a preliminary practical training program for PCAs was established, aiming at coaching our PCAs the quality and safety when assisting physiotherapists (PTs) in providing Physiotherapy service. This year, our department provided this continuous training to the experienced PCAs and the PCA new comers. Also, this created a platform for experienced PCAs to share their practical experience to the green staff and among the PTs. The program includes preparing treatment modalities and machine maintenance. Also, the emphasis of monitoring patients’ condition and ensuring patient safety during transfer tasks and rehabilitation training were reinforced.
Objectives :
1) To enhance proper practice in preparing treatment modalities such as electrical modalities, and use of transfer equipment; 2) To ensure equipment quality and maintenance; 3) To boost safety awareness to patient conditions; 4) To develop competencies and effectiveness of green PCAs
Methodology :
A series of 9 workshops with hands-on practical sessions leading by PTs and experienced PCAs were held from September to November 2019. The sessions were video-recorded as reference materials for revision.
Result & Outcome :
Seven PCAs completed the training, followed by individual practical assessment including preparation of treatment modalities and demonstration of equipment maintenance etc. An overall mean score of 86 out of 100 was achieved, which was up to standard. After assessment, a feedback session was given to consolidate their learning and area to improve in assessment. Moreover, a survey on confidence level on performing individual working tasks pre- and post-training was performed. The averaged confidence level was significantly boost from 2.8 to 3.5 out of 5 after the program using paired t-test (t=3.13, p< 0.05). Also, most PCAs perceived this training program useful to enhance their competency and confidence in daily working practice. The training program will be continued annually to ensure quality and safety of services provided by PCAs.
