Introduction :
Periorbital cellulitis is a common infection of the periorbital soft tissues in pediatric patients, a delay in treatment can result in blindness or life-threatening conditions.
Objectives :
In this project, we review the clinical features, laboratory results and treatment outcomes of periorbital cellulitis pediatric patients managed by our Ophthalmology team over the past 20 years. We aim to share our experience of treating periorbital cellulitis in pediatric patients in a tertiary care hospital in Hong Kong.
Methodology :
A retrospective review of pediatric periorbital cellulitis patients over 20 years in a tertiary center.
Result & Outcome :
A total of 51 patients (45 preseptal and 6 orbital) with periorbital cellulitis were reviewed. The average age of disease onset was 5.4 years old. Fever, extraocular muscle movement restriction, and proptosis(all p< 0.05) were associated with post septal involvement. Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was the most common causative agent and 6%patients had methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. All patients received systemic antibiotics and systemic Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid remains an effective choice of first-line treatment. 4 orbital cellulitis patients required surgical drainage. All patients were cured without long term sequelae. Conclusion: A timely diagnosis with prompt intervention is important to prevent any vision-threatening complication in pediatric periorbital cellulitis patients.
