Introduction :
Most of the clinical incidents are regarded as preventable. Facing the busy workload every day, in order to reduce the incidents such as patient fall, supporting staff should be the essential partners of nurses. Even they are hard-working, they may not be sure what they should do or be cautious about when performing ward round. It is necessary to stimulate and guide them to optimize their work quality.
Objectives :
1) Educate and raise the awareness of the supporting staff about ward environmental safety.
2) Ward environment is kept tidy and orderly.
3) Educate supporting staff the need of reporting.
Methodology :
The supporting staff have been separated into 4 groups. Ten mistakes related to patient safety were pre-set in one cubicle in each session. For example, the wire of Venoflow machine was lying on the floor. Supporting staff were required to find out these mistakes and explain the reasons. Briefings were followed after each session. Prize was given to staff with highest mark in each session.
Result & Outcome :
94.4% of supporting staff joined the 'game’. According to their questionnaires, 100% of the participants expressed their satisfaction (35.3% very satisfied, 64.7% satisfied) on the content of the game. 100% showed satisfaction (47% very satisfied , 53% satisfied) on the method of the game. Also, 100% (41.2% very agreed, 58.8% agreed) agreed the game enhances their awareness on environmental safety and hygiene. 76.5% agreed the time arrangement is appropriate and 23.5% generally agreed only. In addition, 88% of the participants hope to see more this type of activities held within department.
