Introduction :
(1) To study the effectiveness of an individualized carer training program on caregiver burden and smooth discharge from hospital (2) To assess the care-giving competence of carers of stroke survivors (3) To develop a tailor-made and comprehensive caregiver training program with standardized education materials and assessment tools
Objectives :
This pilot interventional study was performed in an acute stroke unit. Eligible subjects who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were recruited by convenience sampling. A standardized caregiver education kit with stroke information and bedside nursing care for stroke was formulated by stroke nurses. Nurse-led caregiver education sessions were arranged according to the need of caregivers. Standardized return demonstration forms were designed to evaluate caregiving performances of caregivers. Phone follow-ups were consented and arranged to evaluate participants’ satisfaction level towards the program after discharge. Others completed satisfaction survey on completion of the training sessions. Feedback survey was also performed on nursing staff participating in the program.
Methodology :
18 pairs of stroke survivors and caregivers were recruited. 100% of caregivers achieved pass in all return demonstration items after the training. 77.8% of carers required one training session while 22.2% required two. 50% of caregivers agreed for phone follow-up and others completed satisfaction survey. All caregivers agreed that they felt supported and became confident in taking care of stroke survivors. All nursing staff involved agreed that this program provided standardized and individualized trainings for caregivers. Recommendations of the program are recruiting more subjects for broader data collection and extending the program to other chronic illnesses to promote carer competence and patient wellbeing. To conclude, the study showed that the CEP improved caregiving burden of stroke survivors. Nursing staff also revealed satisfaction towards the program. It promoted consistency and continuity of care.
Result & Outcome :
I DISAGREE to send the abstract to Continuous Quality Improvement Initiatives System (CQIs) for sharing after HA Convention.
