Introduction :
(1) To enhance the compliance rate of hand hygiene among visitors and to improve patient safety. (2) To achieve at least 80 % compliance rate of hand hygiene of visitors.
Objectives :
Eight psychiatric intensive care units (PICU) were selected for pilot study. Before the program, training sessions to staff, patients and visitors were provided. The availability of alcohol hand rubs and hand wash facilities were ensured. Posters and reminders of performing hand hygiene were posted at eye level in the entrance of visiting room and main doors in the piloted wards. During the program, television with USB-plug function was switched on. It was kept playing the hand hygiene promotion video during visiting. Visitors were reminded to perform hand hygiene by an assigned staff. The staff provided hand rub to each visitor “before patient contact” and “after patient contact”. After the intervention, hand hygiene compliance rate was evaluated by observation. Hand hygiene audits on visitors were performed before and after the program.
Methodology :
The program had been conducted from 18.6.1018 to 7.4.2019. The results showed that the hand hygiene promotion program was useful and significant. It reminded visitors to perform hand hygiene during visiting. The average hand hygiene compliance rate increased from 24% to 86%. The program ran successfully as it made great improvement in the hand hygiene compliance rate among visitors. A higher compliance rate of hand hygiene can reduce cross infection and it can also raise the visitors’ awareness on the importance of hand hygiene.
Result & Outcome :
I DISAGREE to send the abstract to Continuous Quality Improvement Initiatives System (CQIs) for sharing after HA Convention.
