Introduction :
Healthcare service is constantly reforming and progressing. As part of the health service system, nurses need to keep up with the evolving health needs, policies and knowledge in order to adapt to patients’ needs. Studies proposed that cross-training allows inspiration of nurses to extend knowledge and skills, it could also enhance nurses to achieve higher performance as a result of increasing patient care quality.
Objectives :
The goal of the program is to widen nurses’ exposure and broadening their job knowledge and skills. This program is also intended to orient staff nurses on Central Nursing Division (CND) major roles and enhance their competency in nursing service operation to develop job satisfaction and organizational commitment.
Methodology :
A mechanism and structured staff exposure program was formulated and implemented by Central Nursing Division (CND), Bradbury Hospice (BBH), Cheshire Home, Shatin (SCH) and Shatin Hospital (SH) since April 2019 to provide opportunity for Ward Managers (WM) and Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) working in BBH, SCH and SH to widen exposure, enrich job knowledge and enhance competency in service operation. Through inviting staff expression of interest and nomination by Department Operation Mangers, nurses from various clinical departments were recruited into a 2-months program to work in CND. Recruited staff nurses would be provided a comprehensive orientation, on the job training and offered diversified jobs under the supervision of General Manger (Nursing) and senior nursing managers as a practical approach to enrich and expand their understanding and abilities in all aspects of nursing services provided by CND.
Result & Outcome :
From April 2019 to Jan 2020, there were 1 WM and 6 APNs recruited into the exposure program. They had participated in various aspects of work in CND including organization of International Nurse Day celebration, renewal and re-development of nursing guideline(s), replacement of medical equipment through hospital donation fund, monitoring of nursing quality indicators and nursing related incidents etc. All recruited staff had completed their orientation log sheet within the program and had positive influence on their job experience and satisfaction.
