Introduction :
Using portable oxygen for transferring the patient to another clinical area is common in our daily operation and it is utmost important to ensure patient safety when using it. In the past, we used regulators to connect different sizes of oxygen cylinders in (Hospital Authority). With a new model of oxygen cylinder FX O2 replacement, the clinical operation has to be revised accordingly to avoid incidents from happening. In order to ensure safety usage of FX O2 among nurses, an enhancement program was organized at Department of Medicine and Geriatrics (M&G) in United Christian Hospital.
Objectives :
1. To understand the operation differences between FX O2 cylinder and regulator.
2. To ensure the safe use of FX O2 cylinder.
Methodology :
The enhancement program includes:
1. A cue card was designed and posted at storage area of FX O2 cylinders at all M&G wards & AED.
2. Train-the-trainer program was launched at M&G Department Meeting on 29 September 2018. 50 nurses including Department Operating Manager, Nurse Consultant, Ward Managers and Advanced Practice Nurses attended the program. Live demonstration and introducing the cue card were shown.
3. 65 nurses from 13 M&G wards were randomly selected for return demonstrations of using FX O2 cylinder in October 2018. The compliance rate of the exercise was 100%. Nurses appreciated that the cue card was easy to understand and able to alert them when using the cylinders.
4. No related incidents were happened at M&G Department after the enhancement program
Result & Outcome :
An incident related to improper use of O2 cylinders was happened at M&G Department before the program. After the enhancement training and use of cue card, it is expected that no similar incidents would happen again.
