Introduction :
Conventionally, when a patient is admitted to hospital, patient information such as bed and team assignment; patient is living at home or Old Aged Home; the infectious status or the discharge destination (rehabilitation/ convalescent hospital or home), etc. are manually updated on patient board or bed map by ward nurse using magnetic signs or hand writing. However, the information may be unreliable if the magnetic signs are misplaced after it falls down accidentally or the hand writing is unclear. Consequently, it will affect nurse’s judgement on patient management. Therefore, we came up with an idea to develop an electronic bed map to replace the existing patient board.
Objectives :
1. Enhancing information accuracy and literacy
2. Elimination of redundant work on manual update of patient information on patient board
3. Enhance communication among different parties in an inpatient ward
Methodology :
An electronic bed map app is designed to replace the patient board showing the patient information in 11B ward(Acute Geriatrics, Medicine and Geriatric Department of the United Christian Hospital). Some information such as living location are encoded with different colours and others are representing with different electronic icons, numbers or alphabets. The App is installed in a computer tablet and wirelessly connected to a TV screen with a vertical display. Nurses can simply update the patient information via input on a touch screen computer tablet. In addition, a sorting function is added as to show patient from different teams or some specialized patient group such as discharge planning scheme (DPS) or Ambulated Geriatric Service (AGS), so that patients are easily be located.
Result & Outcome :
e Bed Map is eye-catchy and it has enhanced the data accuracy and literacy. All 11B ward staff are satisfied with the newly designed device. Further system enhancement on the e Bed Map for staff communication is also feasible such as assigning patient for bed bath or room bath, etc.
