Introduction :
Pelvic fractures are caused by high-energy forces which results in more complex injuries and require emergency hospital treatment. The use of pelvic circumferential compression device (PCCD) in the treatment of pelvic injuries is to provide stabilization of the pelvis by reducing the pelvic volume, providing tamponade effect, allowing and protecting blood clot formation and hence reducing mortality rate. Therefore, it has become the standard of care of managing unstable pelvic fracture and has been widely used in trauma units. As the cluster trauma centre in Kowloon West Cluster, there has been increasing service needs to handling trauma cases of patients with unstable pelvic fracture. Hence, an enhancement program to nursing staff is needed to maintain our quality care and meet international standard.
Objectives :
(1) To enrich nursing staff knowledge on PCCD application; (2) To standardize nursing staff skills on PCCD application; (3) To ensure the sustainability of this evidence-based nursing practice in caring patients with PCCD in surgical department.
Methodology :
Small groups of scenario-based workshop had been delivered to nursing staff in surgical department, which consisted of a knowledge enhancement session and a hand-on skill station. A pre-test and post-test design was employed to evaluate participates' knowledge with 10 multiple choice questions. The skill of participants was evaluated by direct observation based on an evidenced-based designed assessment form. After the workshop, ongoing skill assessment was maintained to ensure the sustainability of standard nursing care for patients with PCCD in surgical department.
Result & Outcome :
31 participates attended the workshop and their knowledge was evaluated by the multiple choice questions. Average score increased from 3.9/10 (pre-test) to 7.8/10 (post-test). All participants fulfilled criteria required by the assessment form and demonstrated competent skill on PCCD application after the workshop. Participants' feedbacks are positive and found the workshop practical and useful. With the checklist for assessment in daily ward practice, nursing staff demonstrated quality care to patients with PCCD to maintain our nursing standard in surgical department.
