Introduction :
In paediatric specialty, there were numerous of invasive procedures performed at bedside, such as chest drain insertion, insertion of intravascular catheter with the use of guidewire, and wound suturing. Correct patient, right procedure site and counting on the use of instruments are the key elements on bedside procedure checking. It is certainly both medical and nursing staff’s responsibility to ensure that the procedure performed safely. Proper use of bedside procedure checklist can ensure staff on interventional safety and in return, promoting patient safety.
Objectives :
The “STOP AND CHECK” activity was launched in paediatric unit to: -Increase medical and nursing staff understanding on concepts of bedside procedure safety -Decrease staff resistance to initiate bedside procedure checking -Enhance staff alertness on fully compliance to the sequence of bedside procedure checking
Methodology :
1. Formulate questionnaire to look for practice gap 2. Create eye catching posters, stickers and slogan to arouse staff alertness for performing bedside procedure check 3. Produce video using the slogan and gestures to promote activity theme “STOP AND CHECK” 4. Activity month was launched with incident sharing to promote bedside procedure safety 5. Conduct the tongue twister competition, inviting staff to shout the slogan, participants were rewarded with souvenirs designed with activity theme 6. Collect completed bedside procedure checklist to evaluate project outcome 7. Post activity questionnaire was designed to collect feedback and evaluate the change in attitude on bedside procedure safety
Result & Outcome :
The “STOP AND CHECK” activities improved the performance on bedside procedure checking. 100% of interviewed staff reflected that the activities had enhanced the knowledge on bedside procedure safety and made change in attitude on bedside procedure checking. While 96.4% of staff would remind colleagues to initiate bedside procedure checking in the future. The overall compliance rate on the sequence of bedside procedure checking and contents of bedside procedure checklist 3 months after the promotion activities was 96.4%. Similar compliance rate (96.3%) was obtained 18 months after the project.
