Introduction: :
New Drug Application form was required to be completed by medical staff and endorsed by Consultant for any FYKH non-formulary drug item. Pharmacy staff and nurses had to follow up on the application process to ensure drug supply. This involved a lot of time spent by all disciplines.
Objectives: :
To simplify the process of non-formulary drug application and thus reduce the workload for all disciplines.
To ensure drug supply without interruption.
Methodology: :
It was discussed at Drug and Therapeutics Committee (DTC) meeting in April 2019 and endorsed that non-formulary drug application was required only for drugs which cost above $500 per unit.
Drug formulary of FYKH was also reviewed and expanded in August 2019 with doctors' input.
Result & Outcome: :
Workload related to processing new drug applications was greatly reduced to around 10 applications per month compared to more than 50 applications per month before implementation.
There is minimal disruption to drug supply and a lot of time saved.
