Introduction: :
The use of smart devices in the healthcare industry improves connectivity and communication between healthcare workers and patients. Through the integration of intelligence technology, both efficiency and effectiveness in providing patient education can be enhanced. It was proven that the provision of ‘Just in time’ information through audio and visual aids promoted the retention of necessary information and enhanced understanding and experience of patients. With the widespread application of smart devices in OT, we produced a video detailing the perioperative patient journey to optimize the psychological preparedness of our patients as our Evidence Base Project (EBP) in 2019-2020. As it was reported that female patients were more anxious than males, gynaecological patients were chosen as the preliminary sample. Pre and post study questionnaires were designed to evaluate the perioperative anxiety of gynaecological patients using a visual analogue scale (VAS). Pre-study questionnaires were performed while patients were waiting in the waiting area outside theatre room (OT Day 0). Post-study questionnaires were collected at the ward on Post Op Day 1, which assessed patients’ anxiety levels, their views upon the “just in time” approach and the video content relevancy upon their patient journey in OT.
Objectives: :
To evaluate the effectiveness of the informative video in relieving perioperative anxiety in gynaecological patients by the “just in time” approach using iPad.
Methodology: :
A pre-post comparative study was used to evaluate 1. The peri-operative anxiety level of gynaecological patients when they were waiting in OT for surgery (OT Day 0) and in Post-op Day 1 using VAS 2. The effectiveness of peri-operative patient journey video delivered by “just in time approach” to these patients using iPad in OT
Result & Outcome: :
There were 22 participants in the study. Patients who had received just in time peri-operative informative video showed a decrease in anxiety level (From 7.06 to 6.12). Though their anxiety persists, their reported mode of anxiety score reduced from 6 to 5. 94.1% of the participants preferred video to traditional unidirectional media e.g. leaflets and flyers. 94.1% of participants agreed that the informative video was effective in dispelling their doubts upon their patient journey in OT. 82.4% of patients preferred “just in time approach” when receiving peri-operative information.
The use of smart devices to provide peri-operative information was effective in relieving the anxiety of gynaecological patients and promoting their understanding of the peri-operative patient journey in OT with a “just in time” approach.
