Introduction: :
Nursing is a high-stress profession. The sources of stress were coming from overwhelming occupancies of clinical areas and higher acuity of patients. The turnover rate of nurses was high, particularly in young nurses. The health of nurses is perhaps one of the most important considerations for delivering excellent patient care.
Two Team Building Workshops were organized by CND of BBH, SCH and SH in December 2019 to build up positive mindset amongst young nurses and strengthen the resilience towards stress through the introduction and practice of mindfulness.
Objectives: :
1. To build up positive mindset amongst young nurses through mindfulness
2. To encourage young nurses to develop planning in career pathway
3. To widen the network of young nurses
Methodology: :
The theme of the team building workshops was “Embrace the Future, Breakthrough of Self”. Two identical half-day team building workshops were carried out in 9 December 2019 and 18 December 2019. The target participants were frontline nurses with working experiences from 1 to 10 years. They were nominated form all clinical wards and outreaching teams in BBH, SCH and SH.
After the welcoming and supportive message provided by guest speakers including Deputizing Hospital Chief Executive and General Manager of Nursing [GM(N)], a warm up session was carried out. All participants introduced themselves.
Part one of the workshop was “Embrace the Future”. The objective of this part was to encourage participants to develop planning to their pathway as well as to retain nurses in the hospitals. It was led by GM(N). Participants was invited to share their planning in the coming ten years. GM(N) encouraged participants to set goals for their future in different aspects including self, family and career. She presented the career progression model of nursing in HA hospitals.
Part two of the workshop was “Breakthrough of Self”. The objective of this part was to encourage participants to think out of the box when they encountered different problems. Participants were divided into 4 groups. They were provided a sets of problems and difficulties encountered by frontline nurses. They worked in groups and tried to find out solutions as if they were in the positions represented by their group, including GM(N), Department Operation Manager (DOM), Ward Manager (WM) and Advanced Practice Nurse (APN).
The final part of the workshop was a Mindfulness Session led by clinical psychologists (CP) from OASIS of Hospital Authority. Participants were introduced the technique of mindfulness and provided a practice session led by CP.
Result & Outcome: :
Two identical sessions of Team Building Workshops were carried out on 9 December 2019 and 18 December 2019 respectively. A total of 46 young nurses in working in BBH, SCH and SH, with working experience between 1 to 10 years, participated in the workshops. There were 23 participants in each workshop respectively.
Evaluation was collected from each participant after the workshop. Total 46 evaluation forms were received. The average overall satisfaction of the workshop was 5.35 out of 6. 100% of the participants agreed that the stated purposes of the workshop were achieved. 95.7% of the participants agreed that the length of the workshop was appropriate. Some of the participants appreciated the component of mindfulness.
Conclusion
Nursing is a high-stress profession. The Team Building Workshops of BBH, SCH and SH successfully introduce mindfulness to young nurses in developing positive mindset and resilience towards stress.
